![]() ![]() For that reason, this delightfully odd animal has been dubbed the “boilerplate rhino,” although in modern parlance, perhaps “steampunk rhino” may be a more apt moniker for one of the most magnificent megaherbivores remaining on the planet. Not only is it imposingly large (weighing in at approximately 1,900–2,500 kg), its skin seems to be “gathered in slabs – like a suit of armor…complete with breastplate… and pocked with dermal protuberances resembling rivets” ( Quammen 2000:209). Of the 5 living species of rhinoceroses, the Indian or greater one-horned rhinoceros, Rhinoceros unicornis, has long stood out in my mind as the most interesting and peculiar.
